A stationary grabber is a fixed base material handler used in scrap yards, steel plants and foundries to pick up, sort and feed loose scrap within a defined working radius. Unlike a mobile machine it stays in one position, which lets it be built heavier, run longer duty cycles and cost considerably less per operating hour at a fixed feeding point.

Where a stationary grabber makes sense

Most yards have at least one place where material is always picked up from the same stockpile and always dropped into the same machine. A shear infeed, a baler charging box, a shredder conveyor or a truck loading bay all follow that pattern. Putting a mobile machine on that duty means paying for mobility you never use, and paying for it again in fuel and tyre wear. A stationary unit is purpose built for exactly this work.

The other case is space. A fixed pedestal or rail mounted machine needs no travel lane and no turning circle, which matters in yards where every square metre of ground is holding stock.

Built for yard conditions

Scrap yards are harder on equipment than almost any other industrial environment. Ambient temperature runs high, dust load is constant, and the material itself is abrasive and unpredictable. Our material handlers are designed around those conditions rather than adapted from general construction machinery, with attention to cooling capacity, filtration and structural strength at the boom and pivot points that take the most fatigue loading.

Sizing the machine

Three numbers decide the specification:

  • Reach. Measured from the pedestal to the furthest point the machine must work, including the far edge of the stockpile, not just the centre of it
  • Lift capacity at full reach. Capacity close in is easy, capacity at the extremity is what actually limits the machine
  • Duty hours. A machine feeding a shredder continuously needs a different cooling and hydraulic specification from one loading two trucks a day

Getting reach wrong is the most expensive mistake because the only fix is a bigger machine. We work the layout before recommending a size, so the stockpile positions, the feed opening height and the truck bay are all inside the working envelope from day one.

Planning it into the yard

A material handler is only as productive as the layout around it. If the operator has to wait for a loader to bring material into reach, the machine is idle and so is whatever it feeds. Our design team maps the process flow first, positions the handler against it, and only then fixes the machine specification. That sequence is what keeps a yard running at the throughput its processing machines are rated for rather than well below it.
