The equipment utilizes rare-earth permanent magnetic material/electromagnetic coils as magnetic elements, which are suitable for materials with a high iron content and sharp iron parts, and effectively sorts out the iron parts from the materials. A permanent magnetic iron separator uses rare earth permanent magnetic material to pull iron and steel out of a moving material stream. It is the simplest and cheapest way to remove ferrous contamination, and on most sorting lines it is the first separation stage because everything downstream works better once the iron is gone.

How it works

Material is fed over a rotating drum containing a fixed permanent magnet assembly. Ferrous particles are attracted to the drum shell, carried around past the splitter and released on the far side where the magnetic field ends. Non magnetic material follows its natural trajectory off the drum and falls into the product stream. There are no coils, no power supply for the magnet and no field control, which is exactly what makes the machine reliable.

Diameter is selected against burden depth and the required field penetration. Length is matched to your conveyor width so material is not spilling past the ends of the drum.

Permanent compared with electromagnetic

  • Permanent. No coil power draw, no heat generation, no duty cycle limit and nothing to fail electrically. The field is fixed, so it suits a steady and predictable feed
  • Electromagnetic. The field is adjustable, which matters when burden depth or iron content varies significantly, or when the same line processes different material streams

Where the feed is consistent, the permanent unit is the better machine on both running cost and reliability. Where it varies, the flexibility of an adjustable field is worth the coil power.

Where it belongs in the line

As early as practical. Iron removed at the front of a line protects every machine behind it, and the accuracy of eddy current separators, induction sorters and X-ray sorters all improve when ferrous material is no longer in the stream competing for their attention. Tramp iron reaching a rotor or a crusher costs far more than the separator would have.

Sharp, irregular pieces that would jam a mechanical separator are handled without difficulty because nothing touches them except the drum shell.

Specifying a machine

We select drum diameter and length from your belt width, burden depth, feed rate and the iron content in the stream. Belt speed and the position of the splitter are set at commissioning, since those two adjustments have more effect on recovery than any change to the magnet itself.
